'Refugees on the road to Antwerp', Belgium, 1914

Lantern slide manufactured by Newton and Company, 3 Fleet Street, London, 1914 (c).

Belgian refugees travelling with a horse drawn cart.

Following the invasion of Belgium in August 1914 refugees fled before the advancing German forces. The strategically important port of Antwerp was besieged by the Germans in September 1914. Despite its ring of defensive forts and the arrival of British reinforcements the garrison surrendered on 7 October 1914.

From a box of 70 lantern slides associated with the German invasion of Belgium, 1914.
