Other ranks' cap badge, 1st Battalion King's African Rifles, 1950 (c)
Die struck brass badge in the form of a bugle horn, with unit number, '1', within knotted cord, surmounted by crown with scroll bearing the unit title, 'Kings African Rifles'.
The British formed regiments in their African colonies and protectorates in the 19th century. In 1902 the King's African Rifles were formed of units from East Africa, with battalions of soldiers from Nyasaland (Malawi), Kenya, Uganda and Somaliland (Somalia). The officers and some of the non-commissioned officers were British, while the 'other ranks' were made up of local Africans.
