Group photograph of a unit of the Bedfordshire Regiment taken on Christmas Day in North West India. Two of the subjects hold young children while the two soldiers lying down at the front of the group are holding shotguns and displaying their haul of game birds.

Both battalions of the Bedfordshire Regiment garrisoned India for lengthy spells during the last three decades of the 19th century. The 1st Battalion took part in the storming of the Malakand Pass during the 1895 Chitral Expedition.
