Service Respirator No 6 (S6), 1976 (c)

Manufactured by Avon Rubber in Melksham in Wiltshire, and the Leyland and Birmingham Rubber Company.

This respirator was issued to Colonel J Hoare, Station Officer, Iserlohn, Germany, 1976.

The S6 respirator was the protective gas mask issued to the Army from 1966 to 1986, when it was replaced by the S10. It was worn in conjunction with a Nuclear Biological and Chemical (NBC) protective suit. It was an essential piece of kit during the Cold War, and soldiers readily undertook drills and training wearing it.
