Pith helmet, other ranks, worn by Private Thomas Hewitt, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, 1916

During World War One (1914-1918) Thomas Hewitt served at Suvla Bay during the Gallipoli campaign. He was subsequently wounded in Mesopotamia, hit in both legs by machine gun bullets at Umm-el-Hannah on 5 April 1916. He was subsequently discharged as he was no longer physically fit for war service.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records Private Thomas Hewitt (17383) of 'D' Company, 6th Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, dying on 22 October 1918 at the age of 42.
