Recruiting poster, Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own), 1930 (c)
Recruiting poster printed by Gale and Polden Limited, 1930 (c).
The poster features the regimental colours and badge of the Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own) and celebrates the battle honours of the regiment and its predecessor units, the 57th and 77th Regiments of Foot.
The text on the poster includes a quote from the British Vice-Consul at Liege,
'A German General told me enthusiastically that he had never dreamt of such magnificent bravery as that displayed by the Middlesex Regiment in the fighting of 23rd to 27th August, 1914. The accuracy of their firing was a revelation; they hit here, pointing to his forehead, every time; their coolness was wonderful and their trench-work splendid'.
The quote refers to the Middlesex Regiment's involvement in the Battle of Mons in August 1914, during the early stages of World War One (1914-1918).
