The Staff at Headquarters, 1855

Photograph by Roger Fenton (1819-1869), Crimean War, 1855.

Major (later Lieutenant-Colonel) Robert Nigel Fitzhardinge Kingscote, Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Edward Hardinge, Lieutenant-Colonel Poulet Somerset, Colonel Vigo, Major The Hon Leicester Curzon, Lord Burghersh, Count Revel, Doctor Joseph Prendergast, Major Henry Fitzhardinge Berkeley Maxse and Mr Calvert.

Kingscote is the bearded figure standing on the extreme left. Among the other relatives of Lord Raglan pictured are Colonel Poulett Somerset (seated on steps, right), Lord Burghersh and Major The Honourable Leicester Curzon (second and third from the right, respectively). Raglan's nepotism, although not unusual for the time, was nevertheless the subject of comment. Kingscote was dismissive: ''The Times' makes out my Lord's staff are all nearly related and therefore the fate of Europe hangs on a family party. I had no idea we were of so much importance.'
