Captain Walker, 30th Regiment, reading general orders, 1 May 1855

Photograph by Roger Fenton (1819-1869), Crimean War, 1855.

Captain Mark Walker of the 30th (The Cambridgeshire) Regiment of Foot, discharging one of his administrative duties as regimental adjutant. An extract from his journal for Tuesday 1 May 1855 reads 'I got a Photographic portrait taken today of my home and myself.'

However only weeks later a journal entry for Sunday 10 June 1855, just days before Walker transferred from the 30th Regiment to The Buffs, he was severely wounded during heavy firing at Sevastopol, when a howitzer shell dropped beside him and exploded. His right elbow was shattered in the explosion and subsequently had to have his arm amputated.
