'Entrenched Belgian soldiers defending Malines', 1914

Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1914.

While the main German invasion force advanced through Belgium and into France in accordance with the Schlieffen Plan, it was still necessary for them to detach four divisions towards Antwerp in order to prevent the 145,000 Belgian troops there attacking the main force's flank. During their advance on Antwerp the Germans captured Malines (or Mechelen) on 28 September 1914.

From a box of 70 lantern slides.
