Watercolour over pencil, signed in lower right 'L Rawlings', by Gunner Leo Rawlings (1918-1984), 137th Field Regiment Royal Artillery .

A soldier wields an axe to clear the way for other soldiers marching through the thick jungle, two carrying an invalid on a stretcher. In his book 'And the Dawn Came Up Like Thunder', Rawlings writes about his experiences as a Far Eastern Prisoner of War.
