Silver dish for horse wrestling, 1910
Hallmarked, Sheffield 1905; manufactured by Walker and Hall, 1910.
This dish is engraved on the flat centre, 'SURREY TERRITORIAL SPORTS 1910 WRESTLING ON HORSEBACK WON BY TPR E.C. NOTTINGHAM. SIY, 1910'. Trooper Nottingham served in the Surrey (Princess of Wales's) Yeomanry. The sport of wrestling on horseback probably originated in Central Asia, but was adopted by the British as a good way of training cavalry soldiers who had to use their strength and skill to dismount their opponents while maintaining control of their own horse.
