Commemorative Medal for Nurse Edith Cavell, 1915
Nurse Cavell worked as First Matron at the Berkendaal Medical Institute, Brussels. During World War One (1914-1918) it became a Red Cross Hospital, treating both Allied and German wounded. When the Allies withdrew from Belgium in late 1914, Nurse Cavell assisted Allied soldiers in escaping. She was tried and executed by the Germans on 12 October 1915.
