Travelling daftar or office, owned by Surgeon Major Patrick Francis Bellew, Indian Medical Department, 1878 (c)
Mahogany with brass fittings; opens to reveal a series of draws; hinged wings close and lock to protect the interior.
Bellew is recorded as having used this during Major-General Sir Frederick Roberts' march to Kandahar in 1880. The daftar has suffered comparatively little damage in transit. The hinged wings of the piece close and lock to protect the elaborate interior as well as any confidential papers. From the absence of carrying handles, the lack of protective corner bindings and its polished finish, it is presumed that it was transported in a carrying case.
