Box respirator owned by Captain A B Dale, 1st County of London Yeomanry (Middlesex, Duke of Cambridge's Hussars), 1916

Introduced in mid-1916, the small box filter respirator was an improvement on earlier bags and hoods. It gave protection against the different gases then in use. Despite this, the British Empire suffered over 180,000 gas casualties during World War One (1914-1918).
