Entrenching tool, with War Department marks, 1915
Made by E and W Lucas Limited, 1915.
On a battlefield dominated by ever more powerful artillery and machine-guns, soldiers were forced to dig in to survive. Trenches and dugouts became deeper and more sophisticated as the fighting on the Western Front became static. Soldiers were issued with cast iron tools such as this in order to dig into the ground.
