'The Hun and the Home. A Bit of England. A Bit of Belgium. Back up the Men who have Saved You', 1914
Chromolithograph recruiting poster, published 1914.
For many potential recruits in Great Britain, the realities of the First World War were far-off in Europe, and so it was difficult for the British people to imagine the suffering of those closer to the front.
This poster attempts to appeal to potential recruits by comparing the idyllic setting of a typical British village to the destruction and misfortune of similar towns in Belgium. It encourages British men to join the Army to prevent the same fate from reaching Great Britain.
