'Heroes of St. Julien and Festubert' ,1916 (c)

The use of national symbols was common in recruiting posters published in all of the dominions of the British Empire. In this poster a Canadian soldier stands to attention before a Union Flag bordered with Canada's national symbol, the maple leaf, the use of which dates back to the French colony of New France in the 18th century.

This poster was produced in English and French versions and evokes the sacrifice of the Canadians who suffered terrible casualties during the dual battles of St Julien and Festubert in April and May 1915. The Canadians sustained over 6,000 casualties - a third of the First Canadian Division, but still managed to achieve most of their objectives, including capturing the town of Festubert and securing the reputation of the Canadians as capable soldiers.

The bold statement at the bottom 'Shall We Follow Their Example?' is a clear evocation that the reputation won by those heroes of St Julien and Festubert was in need of protection by additional recruits.
