Prize medal awarded at the British Expeditionary Force Vegetable Show at Le Havre, 1917

When they were off duty, soldiers needed to relax and be distracted by entertainment and hobbies. To assist soldiers who were keen gardeners, the British Army even allotted land at one of its Le Harve bases for troops to grow fruit and vegetables.

In August 1917 a vegetable show was held there and prizes and medallions were awarded to the best in each category. This medal was presented to the grower of the best cauliflower. Officers had donated money to pay for the show and prizes and over 9,000 soldiers and civilians visited. The money raised was donated to the British Red Cross.
