Hospital ship in Malta, 1915

The box in the foreground of the picture is actually a makeshift stretcher for offloading the injured at Malta. Hospital ships were often converted cruise ships that had been acquisitioned for the duration of the war by the government, including famous liners like the RMS 'Aquitania'.
