Red Cross ambulance resting, 1915

Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1915.

During the war the Red Cross helped the military medical services treat sick and wounded soldiers. Its personnel were organised into Voluntary Aid Detachments (VAD). Most female VADs worked as nurses while their male colleagues transported the wounded in ambulances, often coming under fire as they moved men away from the front.

From a box of 72 lantern slides.
