'Public Schools Brigade, Royal Fusiliers, 118th Infantry Brigade', 1914 (c)

Chromolithograph after John Hassall, printed by Miles & Co, London, 1914 (c).

Lord Kitchener's initial appeals for recruits were met with incredible enthusiasm throughout Great Britain. One of the great successes of the recruitment drive was the formation of so-called 'Pal's Battalions'.

The recruiters felt the established friendship of neighbours and workmates would make men more willing to enlist together. This poster is aimed at recruiting men for one such 'Pal's Battalion' - the Public Schools Brigade, part of the Royal Fusiliers. It depicts a youthful soldier, appealing to his fellow public school boys to join him in the same brigade.
