Daily Sketch, 6 August 1914

The front page of this populist British newspaper is subtitled 'the man behind this murderous war' and depicts Kaiser Willhelm II of Germany. From the outset of war, British propaganda made it clear that responsibility for the conflict lay with Germany. As the war went on, accusations about German atrocities against Belgian and French civilians increased the vilification of the Kaiser.

From papers collected by Captain Douglas M Grant, 1914-1965.
