Sketches of First World War soldiers, including some preliminary studies for the oil painting, 'Christmas 1916: an Australian Observation Post near Fleurbaix, on the Somme front', by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1917 (c)
Charcoal and wash sketches from a sketchbook by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1917 (c).
In the lower half of the page are figure studies of two Australian soldiers in greatcoats. The two figures feature in the oil painting 'Christmas 1916: an Australian Observation Post near Fleurbaix, on the Somme front', showing Australian soldiers in a crater observing across a desolate stretch of no man's land on the Western Front. The studies above are of what appear to be German soldiers under fire.
