Dugouts on the Somme, September 1916

Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916.

British soldiers rest in their shelters that have been dug into the sides of a trench near Contalmaison. The latter village had been an objective on 1 July 1916. Although elements of the 34th Division reached it that day, it was not secured and bitter fighting continued until 10 July when the 8th and 9th Battalions of The Yorkshire Regiment captured the village.

From an album of 22 official photographs 1916-1918.
