Waistbelt clasp, officer, St Lucia Local Forces, 1880 (c)

Frosted gilt metal circlet edged with white metal and bearing the white metal title, 'St Lucia', together with gilt metal laurel sprays, the white metal cypher, 'VR', for 'Victoria Regina', surmounted by a monarchial crown in relief upon a frosted gilt metal ground. Belt fittings of foliate gilt metal design.

The West Indian island of St Lucia became a centre for sugar cane production in the colonial period. The British and the French controlled the island at different times. The increasingly well fortified harbour at Castries became a valuable strategic prize during the wars between the two powers. As part of the Treaty of Paris of 1814 St Lucia became a British colony. The island gained full independence in 1979.
