The West Indian island of St Lucia became a centre for sugar cane production in the colonial period. The British and the French controlled the island at different times. The increasingly well fortified harbour at Castries became a valuable strategic prize during the wars between the two powers. As part of the Treaty of Paris of 1814 St Lucia became a British colony. The island gained full independence in 1979.
