Cap badge, officer, service dress, Connaught Rangers, 1916 (c)
Bronzed metal badge with prong fittings, with a harp surmounted by a crown above a scroll bearing the unit title, 'Connaught Rangers'. Bronze finished badges like this were produced for officers khaki service dress to blend in and be much less visible than polished gilt or brass badges.
The Connaught Rangers was formed during the army reorganisation of 1881 by merging the 88th and 94th Regiments of Foot. It took its title from the 88th which had traditionally recruited in Connaught.
The regiment existed for 41 years until disbandment in 1922 following the creation of the Irish Free State.
