Shako plate, officer, 94th Regiment of Foot, 1861-1869

Badge in the form of an eight-pointed, rayed star, surmounted by a monarchial crown. In the centre, the pierced regimental number, '94', within a garter bearing the motto of the Order of the Garter, 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' (Shame on him who thinks evil of it).

The 94th Foot was established in 1794 and served during the Peninsula War, the Zulu and Bastuto Wars and the Boer War. Despite serving with distinction during these campaigns and being awarded a number of Victoria Crosses for their efforts, the regiment was amalgamated with the 88th Foot to form the Connaught Rangers in 1881.
