Ulundi in flames, 1879
Hand coloured lantern slide, 1879.
At the end of May 1879, Lord Chelmsford invaded Zululand again, this time with a reinforced army. Despite problems of supply and constant skirmishing, Chelmsford's force made steady progress. On 4 July he drew up his army in a large square opposite King Cetshwayo's capital at Ulundi. The Zulus attacked in their usual fashion, but faced with Gatling guns and artillery their brave charges soon petered out. The 17th (The Duke of Cambridge's Own) Lancers then drove the survivors from the field. Ulundi was burnt by the British soon after.
One of 37 hand coloured lantern slides.
