Attempting to save the guns, Chardeh Valley

Hand coloured lantern slide.

On 11 December 1879 the Chardeh Valley was the scene of a British defeat that led to four guns being abandoned to a large Afghan force. The valley itself was separated from nearby Kabul by the Asmai and Sher Darwaza heights. General Massy's men retreated across these and back to the Sherpur cantonment.

One of 37 hand coloured lantern slides.
