Captain Augustus Hartmann, 2nd Line Battalion, King's German Legion, 1815
Oil on panel by Paul Dumortier, Tournai, 1815.
Dumortier painted this portrait shortly before the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. Hartmann's battalion took part in the battle as part of the 1st Brigade of the King's German Legion which was commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel George Charles Du Plat. The brigade was part of the 2nd (Anglo-Hanoverian) Division. The King's German Legion, formed in 1803 from veterans of the Hanoverian Army, were some of the finest units in the Duke of Wellington's Army during the Waterloo campaign. They had earlier distinguished themselves in the Peninsular War (1808-1814).
