Trumpeters of 4th Duke of Cambridge's Own Hodson's Horse, 1920s (c)

Photograph, Mullick Photo House, India, 1920s (c).

Prior to the mechanisation of the Indian Cavalry bugle calls were used in nearly every aspect of regimental life. A trumpeter had to translate a commander's orders into music that hundreds of sowars could hear and obey, whether this was the order to mount, dismount, charge, gallop or signal time.

From an album of 31 photographs associated with 4th Hodson's Horse and 9th Hodson's Horse, World War One (1914-1918), and India, 1920-1938.
