Caricature of Captain Oswald H Ames, 2nd Life Guards wearing mess dress. Ames was 6 foot 8 3/4 inches tall, reputedly 'The tallest man in the British Army'.
Ames transferred from the 5th Dragoon Guards to the 2nd Life Guards in 1884. Ames led the procession to St Paul's Cathedral in London on 22 June 1897, to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. He retired from the Army in 1906 but rejoined his regiment with the rank of lieutenant colonel at the outbreak of World War One (1914-1918).
