The departure of William of Orange for England, 1688

Line engraving by Romeyn De Hooge, published by J Covens and C Mortier, 1688 (c).

Invited to take the throne by politicians and military officers, William of Orange landed at Torbay in November 1688 with 14,000 veteran soldiers. Although confident they could defeat James II's army, he opted for a defensive attitude while James' support slowly ebbed away. The following April, William and his wife Mary were crowned joint sovereigns.
