General Messervy commanded several Indian formations during the Second World War and went on to serve as Commander-in-Chief of the Pakistan Army from 1947 to 1948. The troops under his inspection may have been part of 7th Indian Division, which saw extensive action in the Burma campaign including the battles of Admin Box (February 1944), Kohima (April-June 1944) and Central Burma (January-March 1945).
