3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) sailed from Catania in Sicily, arriving at Taranto on the Italian mainland on 22 September 1943. 'B' Squadron moved north across the 'heel' of Italy to the Bari area, on the Adriatic coast, on the morning of the 23 September 1943. According to the war diary of the Sharpshooters, 2nd Troop, 'B' Squadron were operating in the Barletta area, north of Bari, on 24 and 25 September, under the command of 17 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
