The ruined church of Norrey-en-Buissons, 1944

Photograph from an album compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North West Europe, 1944.

The 11th century church was badly damaged during fierce fighting following the Allied landings in Normandy. Canadian forces and German SS troops battled for control of the town during June and July 1944. To the right of the Sherman tank, close to the church walls, is a statue of a French soldier, a war memorial commemorating the dead of the First World War.
