Soviet troops advancing under fire in the Dnieper area, January 1944
Photograph, World War Two, Eastern Front (1941-1945), 1944.
Between December 1943 and April 1944, the Red Army launched a series of offensives against the German Army Group South. Launched from the bridgeheads they had established across the Dnieper River during autumn 1943, the attacks were aimed at liberating all of the Ukrainian and Moldovian territories occupied by Axis forces in 1941-1942. The operation was a resounding success and brought the Red Army into Poland and Romania.
