'The Camp of the Second Division, looking East. January 1855.'
Coloured tinted lithograph, 1855. One of 40 lithographs from 'The Seat of War in the East - First Series' after William Simpson, published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi and Company, 23 April 1855.
In this print the camp of the 1st Division can be seen in the distance, on the far edge of the plateau, and between it and the figures gathering firewood in the foreground a camp of French Zouaves is evident.
By this stage during the siege of Sevastopol huts were beginning to spring up about the camps, but want of transport and the long distance from Balaklava harbour rendered it almost impossible to bring up the wood needed for roofing them; and flimsy tents were therefore still in a majority.
