'Dead Huns at a road block', near Primosole Bridge, Sicily, 1943

Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, Sicily, 1943.

The war diary of the Sharpshooters records heavy fighting around the Primosole Bridge over the Simeto RIver in July 1943. During Operation FUSTIAN Allied airborne troops attempted to capture the bridge and 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) were involved in the supporting ground attack.

Sale identifies the German casualties as members of 'Hermann Goering Pz. Grenadiers'. Like the Sharpshooters, the Panzer Division Hermann Goring were veterans of North Africa and fought in Sicily and in the retreat through mainland Italy.

From a photograph album containing 241 photographs compiled by Major Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), 1943-1944.
