Major G L Crocker of 6th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Sicily, 1943

The officer in the centre is Major George Leslie Crocker who was awarded the Military Cross for his actions during the Sicily campaign. Crocker was killed in November 1943, fighting on mainland Italy.

3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) landed in Sicily on 10 July 1943 as part of 4th Armoured Brigade, fighting their way across the island as the Italian and German defenders retreated towards the Straits of Messina. The surviving Axis forces evacuated the island by 17 August.

The 6th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers was a war service battalion created in 1940. The 6th Battalion fought with the 3rd County of London Yeomanry in Sicily and mainland Italy.
