'Capt Freddie Crowley. M.M', Italy, 1943
Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, Italy, 1943.
Frederick Charles John Crowley served with the 3rd County of London Yeomanry throughout World War Two (1939-1945). He was awarded the Military Medal in North Africa in 1942, and went on to become a veteran of the campaigns in Italy and North West Europe.
In early October 1943 the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) was in action near Termoli. The unit suffered casualties from German ground forces and were also subjected to air attacks from the Luftwaffe. The unit's war diary records a move, later in the month, to an area south west of Serracapriola (Sale refers to the Tronco region which fits this description) where its tanks underwent maintenance, winter clothing was issued and the tank crews were rested and undertook training.
