In early October 1943 the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) was in action near Termoli. The unit suffered casualties from German ground forces and were also subjected to air attacks from the Luftwaffe. The unit's war diary records a move, later in the month, to an area south west of Serracapriola (Sale refers to the Tronco region which fits this description) where its tanks underwent maintenance, winter clothing was issued and the tank crews were rested and undertook training.

Edward John Grimwade was a veteran of the campaign in Sicily. The Sharpshooters' war diary notes one action near Primosole Bridge on the 17 July 1943 where Grimwade was involved in throwing grenades at German forces. The action resulted in many German casualties and around 150 prisoners being taken. The war diary notes that Grimwade was awarded the Military Cross in November 1943.
