'Lt Col A A Cameron, D.S.O, M.C., C.O 3 C.L.Y', 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), London, England, 1944

Photograph compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry, World War Two, 1944.

This photograph was taken in March 1944 at Buckingham Palace where a number of officers of the Sharpshooters were presented with gallantry awards, following active service in the Italian Campaign. At this time, the unit was preparing for Operation OVERLORD, the invasion of mainland Europe.

Lieutenant-Colonel 'Sandy' Cameron won the Military Cross and bar and the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), serving with 4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) in North Africa in 1942. Cameron took over command of 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) in Sicily in 1943. He was awarded a bar for his DSO for his actions at Termoli during the campaign on mainland Italy.

Following the invasion of Normandy Cameron was not selected to command the amalgamated 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry and he returned to England to take up a training role.

From a photograph album containing 120 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), 1944.
