This photograph was taken in England prior to Operation OVERLORD, the invasion of mainland Europe in June 1944.
According to the Sharpshooters' war diary John Lampert Aitken joined the unit in March 1941. He took part in the campaign in North Africa for which he was awarded the Military Cross in February 1943. Aitken went on to fight in Italy and Normandy. He was killed, aged 30, with two other soldiers in Belgium, when his scout car hit a mine on 20 September 1944. He was buried at Leopoldsburg War Cemetery.
