This photograph was taken in England prior to Operation OVERLORD, the invasion of mainland Europe in June 1944.
Edward John Grimwade was a veteran of the campaign in Italy. The Sharpshooters' war diary notes one action near Primosole Bridge on the island of Sicily, on 17 July 1943 where Grimwade was involved in throwing grenades at German forces. The action resulted in many German casualties and around 150 prisoners being taken. Grimwade was awarded the Military Cross in November 1943.
