One of the gliders used in the capture of Pegasus Bridge over the River Orne, 1944

Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North West Europe (1944-1945), 1944.

On D-Day, 6 June 1944, Allied airborne forces were dropped behind the landing beaches in order to slow down the Germans' ability to counterattack. Key objectives, such as bridges, road crossings and coastal batteries were seized in order to help the amphibious forces advance inland. British glider-borne troops seized 'Pegasus' Bridge across the River Orne.

From an album containing 210 photographs compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), 1944.
