A truck pulling a 7.2 inch howitzer along a country road, 1944 (c)

Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North West Europe, 1944.

The 7.2 inch gun was used to give heavy fire support for British troops. It was not a new design, but instead a re-lined version of the 8-inch howitzers dating from the First World War. Something of a stop-gap measure to meet the urgent need for heavy artillery, the gun nevertheless performed well in action.

From an album of 211 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
