Soldiers representing British and Colonial Forces were included in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 1897. This photograph was possibly taken at the time of the jubilee.
This subject of this photograph is a member of the Victoria Mounted Rifles in field service uniform. The Rifles were raised by Colonel Tom Price in the mid-1880s, and composed of volunteer Australian soldiers. It later served in the Boer War (1899-1902).
