Sergeant, Field Battery, Honourable Artillery Company, 1895 (c)

Glass negative, W Gregory and Company, 51 Strand, London, 1895 (c).

The Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) is the oldest regiment in the British Army and traces its origins back to 1537. During the 19th Century they raised a field battery of artillery. Each gun was commanded by a sergeant.

Each gun sergeant rode their own horse, rather than in a gun team. He wears a busby and also carries an 1885 pattern sword as well as a circular mess tin.
