Procession through Baghdad, 16 November 1918
Photograph, World War One, Mesopotamia, 1918.
Five days after the Armistice with Germany had been signed a victory parade took place in Baghdad. The city itself had been captured by an Anglo-Indian force on 11 March 1917, but the war in Mesopotamia did not actually end until 14 November 1918. General William Marshall, who took over the command of the troops in Mesopotamia on the death of General Maude in November 1917, is seated on the horse just in front of the standard bearer.
From an album of 334 photographs compiled by Major W Leith-Ross, Army Staff and 13th Frontier Force Rifles.
